 | 01:31 pm - Goodbye from the end of today until next Monday I am sick of the internet, because it is insane. People get on the internet and just lose all sense of reality. People freak out over things that do not actually matter at all (mostly things involving comic books and cartoons.) Yet they also behave in ways which would seem reprehensible outside of the internet.
So I'm going to try to take a break from the internet, starting tomorrow. I will skip solely in the happy world that is known as "the real world" where there is some lack of perspective, but not the terrifyingly overwhelming amount that the internet contains. Perhaps I will go see a movie with friends. Or make cookies. Or go for a walk in the Zilker Gardens, nobody oughta be there in this weather.
I will write things! This will also be a good thing for me, since I tend to be kind of derivative if I spend too much time reading what other people wrote on the internet. That doesn't mean I won't still be writing pathetic fanfics, but I'll be having more fun with it.
It will also make it easier to study! Study good! Current Mood: resolved Current Music: Caffeine - You Spin Me Round (like a reco

 | 05:23 pm Every now and then I listen to the music that was popular as I was entering high school, and I think, "My goodness, everybody on the radio sounded exactly the same, didn't they?" After this Better than Ezra song, I'm turning to Gin Blossoms, and I'll round it off with Third Eye Blind, or maybe some Sister Hazel.
I cut my hair. Before, my hair went down a few inches past my shoulders, now it's up around my chin. It was kind of a spontaneous decision I made around 8 this morning. I tend to say stuff like "I want to try a shorter hairdo" but it usually doesn't happen until I actually get sleepy and brainless and start chopping off hunks myself, then have to go get it repaired. I do have Shadowrun tonight, but that's okay, they've seen me look worse! Anyone else out there bold enough to cut their own hair? .... or stupid enough?
Now that I caught up with the latest issues of One Piece, something that I swore for years I'd never have the time or patience to do (thank goodness for OCD kicking in?) I can return to my other big fan project--writing down every line Momo says in Breath of Fire 3, just because. Or, in the immortal words of Momo, "Wooow!"
Lastest Legion comic was... well, okay. Brainy fortunately is not in his 40s or anything. Nura and Brainy?! I dunno about all of that, now... >.>; Brainy X Goat forever.

 | 08:39 am - I didn't even know I could do that to myself! My foot was really hot and a little sweaty and sticky, you know how skin gets sometimes when it's really sticky? And I turned to get out of my chair, put one foot down, then tripped and put the other foot down on top of it and twisted... and gave myself a rub burn with my own foot! O_o;; And I was so awed by this previously unexperienced height of clumsiness that I had to tell someone.
The last part of One Piece made me cry, and only just now have I remembered that I have a medical condition which will kill me if I don't read enough comics. Oh no! ;_; Current Mood: clumsy

 | 06:17 pm - Food food food I am eating the best dinner! Oh my gosh, this is perfect! Everyone, be happy for the taste sensation in my mouth! I almost don't want to finish it, just so I can eat it again later. But there's not enough of it for real leftovers.
Speaking of food, I love watching the Food Network. This weekend, I'm going to a book signing by Alton Brown! I love that guy! He's the host of Good Eats, which is a show which combines cooking advice with information about the way cooking works. And he isn't afraid to dress up in funny costumes to illustrate a point, or to tell the viewer "Just use canned tomatoes in this, in this dish there's no point in doing otherwise!" and "You could buy a fancy tool to do this for you, but here's how to do it using two plates and a brick!"
Bobby Flay gets on my nerves something fierce, though. I used to dislike Emeril too, but I heard good things about him IRL and now I'm more inclined to be generous. At least he doesn't argue with people about how great his food is.
There's one show called "Paula's Southern Cooking" which freaks me out. Everything she makes is fried or has a ton of cheese or gravy on it. As if that weren't enough, one episode she made an asparagus sandwich. Not just a single neat row of asparagus, either. There were tons of stalks, pointed both ways. It was this huge, two-handed size sandwich filled with asparagus. Weirdest thing... Current Mood: hungry

 | 05:32 am - Buncha geeky talk as usual Funniest thing I've read on a messageboard in days: "What can be done to improve communism?" "Privatize it."
After reading five books of One Piece scanlations, I feel like my eyes are going to bleed. I know, I know, begging theives can't be choosey... ^_^; I'm enjoying it anyway! But I really look forward to hunting down the real books and actually being able to see what's going on and read the (non-Chinese) sound effects...
I've been working a little on translating that Captain Tylor novelette included in the Dragon Comics sourcebook. There's a few problems with it, though... one is that I hate translating in any case and find it as fun as pulling nails, and the other is that this is a novel and not a comic and so I must translate descriptive language as well as dialogue. And the descriptive language is all structured in ways that work in Japanese and don't work in English but I don't want to try to just throw the original structure of the sentences away... Who am I kidding, though? I'm only translating it for myself, and there's no fanbase around to want to read it even if I put it up somewhere. And for that matter, nobody else seems to have even heard of this sourcebook! Who will come and tell me my translations are sloppy or wrong?! Who? For I will embrace that person, just for being another Tylor fanatic.
We've just started a new campaign in my gaming group, and with someone else playing DM. We're using Shadowrun! I at first wanted to adopt my old character Damaru as a character into the game, until I realized (with shi's help) that Kara was perfect for the Shadowrun universe. She's teamed up with a violent but intelligent bouncer, and a mage who mostly communicates in grunts and fireballs. Current Mood: exhausted Current Music: R.E.M. - Find the River

 | 12:52 pm - Sigh, back from Ushi-con At the risk of sounding CBG-ish, worst con ever? Perhaps. Man. This con sucked.
Why, you ask? There was nothing. Absolutely nothing. I guess if I were a big 8-bit Theater fan I could have gone to his panels, but that was about all there was. They had a Tenchi Muyo artist as a guest, which is nice, but wasn't Tenchi popular around 7 or 8 years ago? The panels were all blah, and not a lot of good anime shown either. Friday was the best day. Saturday I went to two things--Trends in Anime Music (just waiting for the next panel to start) and Christianity and Anime, 'cause Sam wanted to see it. Not even any anime watched. The only anime I was interested in seeing, Cosmic Baton Girl Comet-san, didn't come on until 11:30 and I was already sick of the con long before that. I felt a like a dork since I just spent the day hanging around Sam and her roommate, but I also couldn't find anyone else I knew and there was absolutely nothing to do. Never saw Tasha, Dan and Amanda probably just couldn't get away from school and work... sheesh.
Today I went to the con for about an hour. I saw an episode of Violinist of Hamlin, which was depressing, and I saw some random anime music videos. The woman running the room was nice enough to take my request to see the Tylor video she had, and it was terribly cute. Almost made up for the fact that I found the booth which had Tylor posters last year, only they had sold the one I wanted, and still had the later-OVAs weird art style Tylor and Azaling poster. Siiiigh.
I did buy two books of One Piece. I like One Piece a lot. These were the books which finished introducing Usopp (4 and 5) and it was very interesting. In fact, I would judge these books to be the highlight of the con. ^_^;
Edit add: Actually, you know what? Usopp reminds me of Bukichi. That's... peculiar. Current Mood: disappointed

 | 10:23 am Ushi-con day 1 was okay! I spent money, which I had intended not to do, and even said "I will only buy if I see that one Tylor poster I wanted!" but I looked at literally every poster in the dealer room (it took a while) and nope, not even the ugly CD promotional Tylor poster that I didn't want. So instead I bought a Slayers doujinshi which features the most fluffy adorable OOC Xelloss on the cover, an "American doujinshi" by an artist in the dealer room that features Vash and Knives, and a pin of youko Kurama for shi.
Having already spent more than I intended to at this con, I spent the rest of the time going to events and watching shows. I saw Fruits Basket for the first time! It's apparently another of those series that I had gotten the impression was only guys, but which in fact feature interesting female characters. And another of those series that seem to be headed for a threesome. I also watched Chrono Crusade, which I liked a lot after the first episode! Nuns with guns are fun(s.) I went to a panel that was some of the ADV and Funimation voice actors talking about a dub they did, but the show was dumb and one of the voice actors had the shrillest most obnoxious real voice... geh. I participated in Anime Jeopardy, but didn't win. Usually the 'game shows' are one of my favorite parts of the con, but sheesh, it was dreadful. He didn't have any organization at all. I have to wonder if he was even the same guy who did the previous ones, because bleh!
It was a little boring, but today should be more interesting.

 | 12:53 pm - sleepy Here is a meme Sam had. Someone respond to it sometime.
Comment to this entry with a post that I would never post. Something you think would be totally out of character for me - something I'd never talk about, never discuss, never say, anything. It has to be completely out of character.
Still playing Star Ocean. I also have a book, one of those checkout line books, called "What Everyone Woman Should Know About Her Car." It's hilariously bad ("When you're eating your bonbons while watching soap operas with goop on your face, remember this!") and there's one picture that looks SO much like a Star Ocean character. The second one, I mean. So... I'll scan that in later today. I think some of the people reading this enjoyed the Star Ocean series! I did, although I was surprised how short it is without mastering some of the skills. Current Mood: sleepy

 | 11:13 am - The worst bowl of noodles ever Oh, man. I ordered take-out bun, those Vietnamese vermicelli with veggies and meat for like $6 each. I love it because it's usually good as take-out, and I usually have half left over for another meal later. But when I opened it, the lettuce was wilty. And there was no fish sauce! The vermicelli noodles without the fish sauce are all hard and distasteful. At first I tried to just eat it with hot sauce mixed in. But the vermicelli was still too 'hard' for my tastes. Finally I hunted through my cabinets and found a little bottle of fish sauce I bought like 4 years ago. It was still sealed, but the outside was sticky. Afraid it might be kind of gone bad, I tried tasting it, and realized I wouldn't be able to tell if it's bad anyway. So I put a little on, not a lot. Normally I like to drown the noodles as much as possible, but I'm still too nervous about the leaky 4 year old anchovy juice. And just now, eating my bad noodles, I bit into something crunchy. There was an egg shell in them.
Bad lettuce, reject fish sauce in small amounts, egg shell. Eewww. Current Mood: disappointed Current Music: Byrds - Turn Turn Turn

 | 11:36 am - This is a post full of complicated racial issues! Happy MLK Jr. Day! To celebrate MLK Jr. Day, Cartoon Network is having a "Static Shock" marathon. Something about this strikes me as funny. But you know, it's not like I can think of another show they have which would be appropriate.
There's an article that was published in one of the small school magazines at UT, for one of the Asian clubs. It's an embarrassing little piece called "Tales of an Egg--I Put the Asian In Caucasian." Why do I feel the occasional paranoid need to defend my wearing a Chinese button top or eating Asian food? Because I'm afraid I'll be mistaken for... this guy! Here is a transcript.
